Holmes-made Earlham School Apple Crumble

This was a recipe we were taught at school (aged 12) in home economics class.

Ingredients

  • 100g / 4 oz plain flour
  • 50g / 2 oz wholemeal flour
  • 75g / 3 oz butter / hard margarine
  • 800g / 2 lb cooking apples
  • 75g / 3 oz sugar
  • 50g / 2 oz coconut / walnuts

Method

  • Light oven to Gas 5 / 190C
  • Sieve flour into a bowl
  • Cut fat into small pieces
  • Rub fat into flour until mixture looks like breadcrumbs
  • Add coconut to the flour mixture
  • Cut and core apples placing pieces in ovenproof dish
  • Sprinkle apples with sugar and a little lemon juice (optional)
  • Cover with crumble mix and bake for 25-30 mins till golden.
